A Smart Building (or Intelligent Building, or even Digital Building) is one that has the ability to share information between multiple building systems and use this to monitor automate and optimize various processes- from heating and ventilation, to air conditioning, lighting, and security.
In a smart building, data is gathered from building systems and used to maximize the efficient operation of both those systems and the building as a whole. A network of IoT sensors enables this data capture and analysis. For that sensor network, as well as the networked information technology (IT) devices within the building, remote powering is both practical and advantageous.
However, while connectivity and technology are making leaps forward, the technology infrastructure in our buildings has often lagged behind. Attempting to plug a smart building system into a conventional cabling architecture will be complex and negate many of the benefits of the system, such as its flexibility and ease of upgrade.
Designing a robust network with structured cabling at the core is critical to a successful smart building strategy and the ability to realize the goals set for a project. As a new generation of architects and engineers embraces the potential of smart buildings, PoE is positioned to meet many of these properties’ needs.
Based on familiar copper twisted-pair cabling, PoE (Power over Ethernet) provides several key advantages over other power delivery methods for smart buildings. However it requires a fundamental rethink of how we design cabling systems.
